A Lot to Be Thankful For

Yesterday was a beautiful Thanksgiving. I had the company of my family and close friends, great food, and lots of laughter and joy.

I’d like to share something with you that has been very close to my heart lately. A few months ago, I was browsing YouTube and I came across this video of Steve Jobs giving a commencement speech at Stanford University in 2005.

“Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure – these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.”

This speech changed everything for me. It took zero effort to change my life. All I had to do was listen. Every time I’ve caught myself doubting my choices, feeling anxiety, or wanting to worry, I keep reminding myself that I’ll be dead soon. It sounds completely morbid and sad, but this attitude chases away all negativity leaving what is most important—following your heart.

For those of you who have been following me for the past few years, I am most thankful for you. I hope that you all have had a great holiday and I can’t wait to see what this next year brings.
